As more wineries use outside facilities for winemaking, barrel storage, case goods storage the issue of who is responsible for a loss comes into play.
Most of you know that any facility that stores and ships your cased goods is not responsible for insuring your property and they require you to provide a certificate of insurance showing that you have added them as a location where you have property. If you have any property at another winery or barrel storage facility the same holds true. You must list that location so that your coverage’s for property including leakage, contamination and equipment breakdown will cover your wine at these additional locations.
If you are a winery that has multiple AP clients you might want to consider adding an endorsement to cover products in your care, custody and control in the case of gross negligence on your part. This is one of the largest grey areas of winery insurance and causes the most grief at claims time.
We would be happy to talk with you concerning your specific situation or just some general guidelines to make sure you are protected.

Lodi Wine Country
January 29, Lodi ,CA
We started our Friday trip to the Lodi wine country at the stunning Lodi Visitor’s Center. As part of the Lodi wine grape alliance the center offers tasting of five weekly rotating Lodi wines as well as a large stock of wines for sale made with Lodi grapes. Janet and I were joined by Nick from Fairmont Insurance Company for the day.
We visited several wineries and two of the stand outs were Jesses Grove and Harney Lane. As growers and producers of Zinfandel wine with our CrossLynn Estate label we were captivated by the 118 year old plants around the tasting room.
As with a lot of the wineries in Lodi, Jesses Grove is now being operated by the sixth generation of growers/winemakers. Their wines were across the board great and we loved tasting Zin’s made from 35,65 and 100 year old vines. It was quite a treat.
Harney Lane is now run by the fourth and fifth generation. As long time growers the winery and tasting room is only two years old, the brainchild of the youngest generation. An absolutely gorgeous tasting room on par with any on the Central Coast, Napa or Sonoma. Being fifth generation growers doesn’t hurt either. With intimate knowledge of each vineyard block Harney Lane crafts varietal wines with all the elegance and finesse of a well established estate.
Their magnificent gardens beckon us for a return visit in the spring.

Todd Taylor Wines
The Old Sugar Mill, Clarksburg, CA
January 27 On our trip north for Unified Janet and I made a side trip to Clarksburg in the Sacramento Delta to visit The Old Sugar Mill, a restored sugar beet mill that now contains seven wineries including Todd Taylor Wines. Todd and his wife Gloria located their winery in The Old Sugar Mill three years ago choosing to forgo building a facility in the Sierra Foothills and haven’t looked back. The facility draws up to 4,000 visitors a weekend and the Taylor’s easily sell out their 2,500 case annual production.
I enjoyed talking with Todd about his minimal interventionist techniques for crafting his single varietal wines and the importance of vineyard stewardship. We had a chance to taste through the current Todd Taylor offerings and found all the wines to be full bodied with a real sense of the fruit and terrior from which the wines originated. We cut our visit short to allow Todd and Gloria to get busy cooking for the 700 plus guests coming for their Saturday wine club release party.
Great job Taylor’s!

Winery Care Holiday Dinner
December 9
CrossLynn Estate Vineyards, Paso Robles, CA
Janet and I really enjoyed hosting the final Winery Care BBQ at our home and vineyards in Templeton. Well it was not exactly a BBQ as we decided to bring things inside given the 30 degree weather and have a sit down dinner. With sixteen wineries in attendance as well as Nick and his wife Joann from Fairmont Insurance Group everyone was in the holiday spirit. Great wines were drunk, excellent food consumed, and new friendships made. What a great way to end our second year of successes and growth for Winery Care and our CrossLynn Estate Vineyards label.

Unified Wine and Grape Symposium
January 26th and 27th, Sacramento Convention Center, Sacramento, CA

Janet and I were pleased to represent Winery Care at the 2011 Unified Wine and Grape Symposium, the largest winery products show in North America. Given the record number of vendors in attendance and their abundance of new offerings the wine industry seems poised for recovery this year.
It was great to spend time with some of our industry friends like Nick and Kelly from Fairmont Insurance Group, Dan and Eric of Labletronix, Ryan and Andrew of Vintners Vault and Greg Bronson from Great American Crop Insurance to name a few. Everyone kept very busy given the record attendance at this year’s event.

Wednesday we enjoyed a great lunch at the Esquire Grill compliments of our friends at Wines & Vines and were glad to take Nick, Kelly and her husband Geno along with us. Good food and wine, isn’t that the reason we got in the industry in the first place.
I am always interested in all the great oak cooperage displays and would love to have some of those large fermentation tanks that are so cool. Janet spent time checking out glass and labeling machines since she is in charge of our CrossLynn Estate bottling and labeling duties. She did take the opportunity to check out a harvester but it would be a little overkill for our four acres of estate vineyards. Finally we both spent time looking over all the wine club management software options that are now available. As the wine business becomes more driven by the likes of the Internet and social media this is defiantly one of the growing market segments to look to for improving your wineries efficiency and revenues.

Well that’s all for this year. Hope to visit more of your wineries soon.
Cheers,
Kevin
